JOB PURPOSE: The selected candidate will be responsible for operating, maintaining, calibrating, troubleshooting processes and equipment at the 96 MGD Howard F. Curren Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant and the 200+ pumping stations.


  • Performing semi-skilled work of more than average difficulty in all areas of operations, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, co-generation, or buildings and grounds.

  • Performing duties and assigned tasks in conformance with established procedures requiring the exercise of reasonable initiative and independent judgement.

  • Troubleshooting complex problems in AWT processes.

  • Performing tasks that involve hazardous materials, equipment and high voltages.

  • Complying with appropriate safety precautions at all times.

  • Performing tasks that include climbing ladders, working in confined spaces and lifting 50 pounds.

  • Working 24/7 shifts as required including normal day shifts, all off shifts and addressing emergencies on off hours including weekends.

  • Performing and assuming role of Shift Supervisor/Leader when necessary.
  • Performing other related work as required.

  • Ability to train, lead and motivate others to perform at a high level.

  • Strong computer and network skills.

  • Strong programming, configuration and analytical skills.


  • Knowledge of safe work practices for all voltages up to medium voltage (13.2KV) along with the confined space, MSDS, lock-out tag-out and other industrial work place safety practices.

  • Knowledge of basic safety practices; unit control panels.

  • Knowledge of the principles of anaerobic digestion, nitrification/denitrification, cryogenic oxygen systems, chlorination/disinfection.

  • Knowledge of laboratory testing as it pertains to wastewater treatment operations.

  • Knowledge of the electrical distribution in each area of the plant.

  • Knowledge of emergency response procedures and proper outside contacts.

  • Ability to maintain general mechanical and electrical equipment

  • Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with co-workers and the public.

  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds; climb ladders; work in confined spaces; utilize basic safety practices (e.g. lockout/tagout).

  • Ability to apply intermediate computer skills.

  • Ability to demonstrate basic electrical safety procedures.

  • Ability to collect and analyze data and generate reports.

  • Ability to demonstrate correct task performance to lower level employees.

  • Ability to operate light equipment such as man lift and man safe retrieval hoist; operate heavy equipment; identify proper mechanical lubrication requirements and applications.

  • Ability to identify various types of electrical equipment; monitor and record readings on all equipment in accordance with standard operating procedures.

  • Skill in the use of hand tools and small power tools.

  • Able to conduct basic troubleshooting on VFD drives and starting controls for large motors.

  • Knowledge of SCADA.


    High-school graduation or GED supplemented by further training from trade schools, military or manufacturer's training with six (6) years of utility experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Selected employee will have one (1) year beyond the standard probationary period to achieve the qualifying skill sets.

    Special Qualifications: Possession of a Class “A” Wastewater Operators license is desired. Prefer ten (10) years experience in a Wastewater Treatment plant of comparable size.


    Possession of a valid Florida Driver’s License. Submit copy of license with the application. Must be able to obtain a CDL class “B” license within 6 months of start of employment.


    Evaluation of training and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing. Selected applicant must pass a federal background check for Port of Tampa access.
