JOB PURPOSE: The selected candidate will be responsible for performing a full range of professional accounting activities in the Cityís centralized Accounting Division. The Accounting Division administers the general ledger; processes payroll and pension records; maintains accounts receivable and payable; controls reimbursements and interdepartmental billings; and is responsible for investing City funds as well as negotiating bond issues. Additionally its personnel are responsible for balancing utility accounts; providing property control and central cashiering services; producing financial reports and administering the City's pension fund.


  • Organizing, maintaining, processing and reviewing financial transaction records.

  • Preparing financial statements and reports.

  • Analyzing and interpreting fiscal records.

  • Compiling worksheets and schedules for auditors.

  • Balancing general ledge transactions.

  • Performing specialized accounting tasks for federal grants, general ledger and work order systems.

  • Ensuring funds are available.

  • Providing timely payments.

  • Participating in the design, review, implementation, and maintenance of accounting systems.

  • Monitoring and evaluating the efficiency of accounting, internal control, and record maintenance systems.

  • Reviewing current accounting practices, procedures, controls and systems, and ensuring compliance with the same.

  • Recommending process improvements to ensure effective and efficient methods and work practices.

  • Coordinating with staff in other central accounting areas.

  • Performing related work as required.


  • Knowledge of accounting principles, practices and methods.

  • Knowledge of governmental accounting principles and procedures.

  • Knowledge of laws, rules and regulation applicable to municipal governmental accounting.

  • Ability to use computers and other technology and equipment necessary to perform the requirements of the job.

  • Ability to analyze, interpret, prepare, and communicate accurate and complete fiscal records, financial statements, summaries and reports.

  • Ability to identify and develop accounting system improvements.

  • Ability to maintain accurate and complete technical operating records.

  • Ability to prepare and distribute effective oral and written reports.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with user departments, other employees and the general public.


    Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelorís degree in accounting or a closely related field, preferably with one (1) year of professional accounting experience. An acceptable transcript of college coursework and/or credits may be requested.

    PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS : Experience with Oracle E-Business Suite is preferred.
