JOB PURPOSE: The selected candidate will perform assignments involving installation, maintenance, repair, and modification of electrical and electronic traffic signal systems and controls and street lighting poles and wiring.


  • Performs technical traffic control work.

  • Installs, maintains, modifies, and repairs solid state, electrical and electro-mechanical traffic signal control systems and equipment

  • Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on traffic control systems in the field and shop; installs overhead and underground communication cables.

  • Installs traffic controllers, cabinets, signal heads, signal cables, lines between adjacent controllers and push buttons.

  • Serves in a lead capacity.

  • To work nights, weekends and overtime as required on an emergency or scheduled basis.

  • Drives and operates aerial lift platform bucket truck, tower truck, and light automotive equipment.

  • Performs related work as required.


    Working knowledge of: basic principles and practices of electricity; methods, practices, techniques, materials, tools, and equipment pertinent to construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical and electro-mechanical traffic signal systems and controls; occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions.

    Ability to: maintain, install, detect defects in and make repairs to electrical and electromechanical traffic control equipment; read and work from plans and schematics; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; follow oral and written instructions; prepare and submit clear, concise and accurate reports; lead and assign work to others; perform duties requiring physical strength and endurance in out-of-doors and inclement weather.

    Skill in: diagnosing electrical and electro-mechanical traffic control equipment problems; use and care of electrical and electro-mechanical testing devices, repair tools, and equipment.


    High-school or vocational-school graduation and one (1) year experience in electrical and electronic traffic control equipment maintenance, repair and installation work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.


  • Possession of a valid Florida Commercial Driver's License Class "B" plus Air Brakes. (Submit photocopy of CDL with application.)

  • Possession of International Municipal Signal Association Level II Certification preferred within 18 months of employment.


    Evaluation of training and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.
